Get a moped licence (原付) in Japan

The moped licence (原付, gentsuki) needs one written test at the licence centre and a short safety course on the same day. Here are the steps, the test format, the documents, the fees and what to say when you book.

What to say when you book

  • 原付免許の試験を受けたいです。

    I would like to take the moped (原付) license test.

Step by step

  • Apply directly at the license center (no school needed).
  • Same-day knowledge test (50 true/false questions).
  • Attend the moped safety lecture (原付講習).
  • The 原付 license is issued the same day on passing.

The written test

  • Moped test (原付): 48 questions, 30 minutes, pass mark 90%.
  • True/false questions in the official format. Check with your licence centre which languages the test is offered in.

Document checklist

  • ID / residence proof (Residence Card or My Number card)
  • Recent 住民票 with your address
  • ID photo per the center
  • Application + safety lecture (原付講習) fees in cash (~¥8,000)
  • Blue or black pen
  • Glasses/contacts if needed
  • Clothes suitable for the short riding lecture

Fees

  • 原付 / Moped: application fee ¥1,600, licence issue fee ¥2,350.
  • Some prefectures offer limited languages for 原付.
